Fundação D. Anna de Sommer Champalimaud e Dr. Carlos Montez Champalimaud (Champalimaud Foundation), a private, non-profit research institution, is opening a call for a post-doctoral researcher. Eligible candidates must hold a PhD or Doctorate degree and will be offered an employment contract with unknown term, within the scope of the research project entitled “Odors and memory: neural mechanisms for encoding contextual information in olfactory cortex” – LISBOA-01-0145-FEDER – project “PTDC/MED-NEU/28509/2017” from the call Nº 02/SAICT/2017, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through the Lisbon Regional Operational Programme and by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), through Portuguese National Funds (PIDDAC).
The contract is to be entered into by and between the Champalimaud Foundation and the selected candidate in accordance with all applicable legislation, including Law-Decree 57/2016, of the 29th of August of 2016 in its current edition and the General Labour Code, as well as the internal rules and regulations of the Champalimaud Foundation, taking into account the conditions set out in the above mentioned Law-Decree for the recruitment of PhD Holders within the scope of research projects funded by public funds.
The employment contract is with unknown term, starting within the 30 days after this call closing date. Notwithstanding, the parties may, at any time, wish to celebrate a permanent employment contract.
WORK TO BE PERFORMED
Subject of Activities:
At the Mainen Lab, the fellow will participate in developing and performing computational analysis methods on large ensemble neurophysiological recordings to study the olfactory and memory systems in rodents. The fellow will also assist in designing and implementing novel behavioral paradigms to study olfactory discrimination using virtual reality and closed loop behavioral systems in rodents. This position will include a broad and evolving range of tasks, including:
» Analysis of neurophysiological and behavioral data, and application of computational models and methods;
» Working with experimentalists to develop theory for olfactory cortex during context-based discrimination;
» Close collaboration with other team members to design experimental manipulations to specifically test theory for olfactory cortex during context-based discrimination;
» Development of analysis pipeline to collect and analyze data.
PROFILE OF CANDIDATES
Any national, foreign and stateless candidate(s) holding a PhD degree.
« PhD in Biology, Neuroscience, Cognitive Science or other research areas relevant to animal behaviour and computational methods;
« Ability to work independently on a research project;
« Research experience, ideally with computational analysis and modeling of neurophysiological or similar datasets;
« Good capacity for teamwork, critical thinking and communication skills;
« Fluency in English.
Additional optional qualifications:
~ Experience in any of the following areas will be beneficial to the application: animal behaviour experiments, particularly in rodents; data analysis and modeling; computer programming (esp. Python and Matlab); theoretical neuroscience;
~ Hardware development or engineering experience.
The monthly remuneration to be attributed is the 33rd level of the single remuneration table (TRU), approved by Portaria nº 1553-C/2008, of December 31st, starting at a base gross salary of 2,128.34 Euros.
